| Ability to Reframe
Thinking
Problematic
performance issues that create GAPS exist in all organizations.
The second function of management is to encourage bringing up “the
way it is” or allowing the reality of the organizational
life to surface. Only when management is willing to acknowledge
the existence of performance issues and GAPS can they begin
to fully understand how those issues impact individual and group
performance. Reality surfaces when management is willing to deal
head on with resolving the performance issues that create GAPS.
There is a clear link between management practices and the performance
of organizations. Allowing reality to surface is about management
developing the ability to explore how their thinking and actions
impact everyday performance in an organization and create
performance issues. Reality is learning what it takes to get individuals
and groups to do their best. Reality is about management first
developing the ability to improve their own level of professional
effectiveness in creating, communicating and executing strategic
plans and operational goals.
The end result is distinctive performance from management. This
enables the organization to create extraordinary thinking that
leads to achieving extraordinary outcomes.
Reality surfaces when management is willing to:
- Understand how limitations in thinking create situations
that hinder performance
- Know how natural internal barriers impact planning and executing
goals
- Challenge organizational thinking so individuals and groups
can reframe their thinking to match the current and future reality
of the organization
- Learn new skills in areas that are the core of one’s
ability to produce results.
- Explore their own level of effectiveness
- Eliminate behaviors and practices which fail to bring out
the best in people
- Engage self in developing new thinking and leadership behaviors
